Kay Kane began her tertiary studies in Fine Art at St. Martin’s School of Art & Design in London followed by three years at the Central School of Art & Design, also in London. She completed her studies in the early 1980s, gaining a Diploma and B.A. in Fine Art (Painting). After leaving college, Kay showed her work regularly in London, including two one woman shows at Cale Art Gallery in Chelsea. She was accepted for the Royal Academy Annual summer Exhibition, in London in 1984 and 1985, and was a semi-finalist in the John Player Portrait Award at the National Gallery, London in 1982 and 1983.
Returning to Australia in 1989 after the birth of her first child, Kay continued painting in various genres, concentrating particularly on Australian landscapes. She has completed a series of portrait commissions (that included the Vice Chancellor of Central Qld University, the Mayor of Redcliffe and the Mayor of Woocoo Shire Council) as well as showing work in prestigious Art Exhibitions such as the Alice Bale Art Award and the Stanthorpe Arts Festival.
Kay has been the principal life drawing instructor in the Department of Animation, Griffith Film School, Queensland College of Art since 1997 and also worked as a painting and drawing instructor at the Arts Academy, Balmoral, Brisbane from 1997 until 2006. In 2009 she has began teaching life drawing (Intensive Courses) in the Multimedia Degree at Queensland College of Art, at the Gold Coast Campus, Griffith University.
Kay has been the winner of the bi-annual Agnes and Harold Richardson Drawing Award the last two consecutive years.
She has completed a series of paintings entitled The Restoration of Venus, these being the project for her DVA (Doctor of Visual Arts) at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Research on the theory of painting and art for the Exegesis accompanying these paintings being entitled The Restoration of Venus, The Nude Beauty and Modernist Misogyny.
Kay is currently completing a portrait commission while working on 3 new series of paintings – a series of landscapes, a series of portraits, while continuing to extend the series “The Restoration of Venus”.
